A smelly drain can release an odor throughout the entire house. Kitchen drains can start to release odors like rotting food, or your bathroom sink and shower might start to smell like a sewer. Kitchen drains often accumulate grease and trapped food from dirty dishes, which can attract pesky fruit flies and produce bacteria. Bathroom sink and shower drains accumulate toothpaste, soap, hair, and body oils which eventually creates a clog that starts to stink.
Before you call in a plumber for professional help, there are some very simple things that you can do to clean a smelly drain yourself. Use a Plastic Drain Snake The plastic drain snake is a handy tool and does a great job of grabbing gunked-up hair and soap scum out of a drain. They are easy to use; you just remove your tub stopper or drain cover and then insert the snake into the drain while turning slowly so the tough little bristles can grab any hair and debris. You might want to be wearing plastic gloves for this and have a little trashcan nearby to quickly drop the disgusting, smelly mess. If you don’t have any plastic drain stakes, you should get some; they are inexpensive, and having a multipack on hand is always a great idea. Use Hot Water and Dish Soap There is a reason why hot water combined with dish soap cleans grease off of dirty dishes, this works on a stinky drain too. It has to be hot, boiling water for this to work so bring a pot of water to a boil, turn off the heat, and add a small amount of liquid dish soap. Slowly pour half of the boiling water and dish soap down your drain and let it work for at least five minutes to dissolve any greasy buildup. After five minutes, turn on the cold water on high for at least one minute, and it will solidify the greasy residue. Then pour the rest of the hot water into the drain to flush it all out. This easy method with hot water can oftentimes solve your smelly drain problem but be sure to snake it first and remove any hair and debris that you can. How To Keep Your Drain From Stinking You can help to prevent your drain from developing odor-causing clogs by following some simple routine maintenance. For kitchen drains, do not pour grease down the drain and always flush with hot water after washing dishes. To help prevent stinky bathtub drain odor, use a plastic drain snake every 2 to 3 months and make sure you have a proper bathtub drain cover. If you need to snake the overflow tube, having a simple overflow plate like the Watco Innovator® Bathtub Overflow Plate Kit gives a beautiful look to your tub with an overflow plate that is easy to remove for maintenance. FixMyDrain.com offers the most innovative bathtub stopper replacement on the market from Watco, a name recognized for high-quality bathtub repair and replacement parts. The SimpliQuick® Tub Fix helps to prevent hair from entering the drain with a mesh grid drain cover and easy-to-use push-pull stopper. Every homeowner should understand the different bathtub parts and how they work for easy tub repairs if something goes wrong. Understanding the parts of a tub also makes it easy to upgrade your bathtub with new replacement stoppers or tub fixtures. The main parts of a bathtub besides the tub itself include the means to supply water to the tub, and the framework of plumbing pipes and drains to control the flow of water.
The basic parts of a bathtub include: Water supply - the water supply is the pipes that bring the water to your tub with a hot water and a cold water supply pipe. Diverter pipe – a diverter pipe is often used to connect the hot and cold water supply to come out of the same faucet. They are used in many sinks and tubs and to send water to the shower. If you suddenly experience low water pressure, it is a good idea to check your diverter pipe. Shut off valves - in newer homes built within the last 40 years, many fixtures will have a separate stop valve to shut off the supply to the fixture. In case of emergency, without shutoff valves, you would have to shut off the main supply to the house. If you do not have separate stop valves on your water supply, you may want to install them in case of emergency. Tub faucet - your tub might have a separate faucet for hot and cold water control or it could have one handle to control the temperature from both hot and cold water supply. Your faucets control the flow and temperature of water entering the tub. Bathtub drain - the tub drain is a key component of any bathtub, allowing for easy draining of water. The body of the tub is typically designed so that water will run towards the drain to exit the tub. A drainpipe is affixed under the drain to take your tub water to the main waste drain. If your drain is clogged, it is usually from a buildup of hair or debris and it may be a good time to change or tub stopper and make sure that you have a drain cover. Tub stopper - your bathtub stopper holds water in your tub and can easily be controlled to let water flow out of the drain. If your tub stopper is not holding water, you should replace it with an easy to install product like the SimpliQuick® Tub Fix by Watco. This is a very simple tub stopper replacement with a high-quality product from a trusted name like Watco. Overflow pipe - the overflow drain sits up high just a few inches away from the top of the tub, usually directly above the tub drain, and sometimes with a lever sticking out to control a trip lever stopper. The overflow drain protects against overflowing if the water is accidentally left on or gets too full. Watco provides a patented snap-on Innovator® Overflow that will retrofit any one-, two-hole or even a trip lever overflow. Other plumbing pipes under the tub include the trap, also called in S-bend, which traps water in that part of the pipe to prevent gasses from passing into your home while still allowing wastewater to flow out of the house. If your bathtub stopper is operated by a lever sticking out of your overflow plate, you have a trip lever type of bathtub stopper. The lever is connected to a plunger which falls to the junction of the bathtub drainpipe and overflow pipe to block water flow when you flip the lever up. Consequently, flipping the lever down flips the plunger up and allows water to drain.
A trip lever bathtub stopper can become less effective over time, allowing water to flow even when it should be in the plugged position. This can be due to the linkage that can become corroded and the plunger itself can accumulate soap scum, hair or debris and may even get stuck or break off and disconnect from the linking rod which will cause serious problems when you cannot drain your tub. Replacing a trip lever tub drain with a push-pull drain is often a good idea and is easier than you think with modern tub repair products from well-known brands like Watco and a little direction in how to convert your lever bathtub drain to a push-pull drain. How to Remove Your Trip Lever Stopper To remove your trip lever tub stopper, you’ll need a screwdriver to remove your overflow plate, and some old rags or towels handy. Remove the visible screws on the overflow plate which should allow you to lift up and pull the linkage and stopper out of the drain along with the overflow plate. This is what the towels are for as this is likely to be messy, so lay everything on your towel to protect your tub. It takes many working parts on your bathtub for water to flow freely or hold when you want it to. The overflow plate on your tub is just as important as the drain and can often be overlooked. The overflow plate is designed to protect against just that, water overflowing out of the bathtub. If you start a bath and then walk away and get preoccupied, or a child turns the faucet on and walks away, a runny faucet left on with a clogged drain, any number of things can go wrong and cause significant damage to your bathroom floor, appliances, and your tub.
How Does a Tub Overflow Plate Work? Every bathtub overflow plate is designed with an opening that should be facing downward, so that if water overflows it goes into a pipe that connects to the main drain. This protective device provides a detour for overflowing bathtub water, giving homeowners time to correct the problem and prevent disaster. If your overflow plate isn’t in good shape, it might be time to replace it if it will not do the job when needed. When to Replace Your Overflow Plate It is always best if you can identify a problem with your overflow plate early on to prevent a bigger problem later. There are some signs that you might need to replace your tub overflow plate. Sometimes, the rubber gasket behind the faceplate can break down and cause water to exceed the cover instead of drain like it should. Another cause of the overflow plate not draining properly could be due to a clogged drain. The overflow plate won’t be able to do its job if the drain is severely clogged. If your overflow plate does not drain like it should, water can seep beneath the tub and turn into a leak far away from the water source. Replacing Your Tub Overflow Plate Fortunately, products exist today that make it easy to replace your bathtub overflow plate and other important tub drain parts like bathtub stoppers. If your overflow plate needs replacing, it is likely that your bathtub stopper could be upgraded as well. Watco offers bathtub trim kits that include a new tub overflow plate, tub stopper and drain that any homeowner can easily install themselves. Woodford Mfg. is well known for high quality yard hydrants and outdoor faucets, with many frost-proof versions available that provide reliable irrigation solutions in freezing temperature conditions. Installing a Woodford yard hydrant is a great way to provide worry-free water flow to areas that need it even during winter temperatures. When taking care of livestock, ranches, farms, or outdoor properties, reliable irrigation is a must.
Learn how to install a Woodford yard hydrant and never worry about having a fresh water supply again. Here are the simple to follow instructions for installing a Woodford Yard hydrant: 1) Dig a hole for your hydrant that is deeper than the bury depth and about 2 ft. in diameter. 2) Flush out debris, gravel, etc. from the supply line prior to connecting the hydrant. 3) Install the hydrant with the drain hole below the frost line. Use wrenches on the supply line fitting and brass valve body only to prevent over-tightening the hydrant assembly as that can affect the operation of the hydrant. 4) If the supply line does not support the hydrant, use a suitable support driven in the bottom of the pit like pipe or rebar to support the hydrant. 5) Check the hydrant connection for leaks by turning on the water, prior to filling the excavation. 6) Make provisions to allow water to drain from the hydrant drain hole every time the hydrant is closed. a) If installing the hydrant inside a concrete driveway, or inside a structure, connect a 1/8” copper drain tubing to the drain hole and dig a remote drain field outside for the drain pipe to empty into. If this remote piping drain field is not installed, water from the hydrant drainage will surface near the hydrant and cause muddy areas or damage to floor surfaces. b) If the ground in the hydrant drain field gets saturated, it can prevent the hydrant from fully draining and can cause freezing. A larger drain field may be required to give the hydrant a place to drain in areas that have a tendency to have standing water. c) Be sure to fill the bottom of the pit with ½” gravel up to about 3” above where the brass drain valve body is, to provide proper drainage. See Woodford instructions for hydrant installation and contact BuyEagle.com for more information on finding and installing the right outside hydrant for your property.
